1. Letter from the President,
Dear Members,
I read in a biography of George Inness that he never considered a painting
completely finished. In fact there is a story in which he visits a clients home
and demands to take his recently sold painting back, only to rework it to a
point that the owner of the artwork could hardly recognize it upon Inness's
touch-up! I think that trait exists in many artists and I know for sure it does
in me. I rarely look back at a painting without wanting to change this color or
that value....or lock it up in the closet altogether.
Thanks to Bob Shine in coordinating this month’s program, WAA artists will have
a second set of eyes to critique their art. Local artist Tim Gaydos will join us
in critiquing our artwork at our monthly meeting on Monday, April 21. This is a
wonderful learning experience and you'll learn a lot from listening to others’
critique as well as your own.
PS: Leave your ego in the car!
Regards,
Mike

"There is a vitality, a life force, a quickening that is translated through you
into action, and because there is only one of you in all time, this expression
is unique. If you block it, it will never exist through any other medium and be
lost. The world will not have it. It is not your business to determine how
good it is; nor how valuable it is; nor how it compares with other expressions.
It is your business to keep it yours, clearly and directly, to keep the channel
open. You do not even have to believe in yourself or your work. You have
to keep open and aware directly to the urges that motivate you. Keep the channel
open. No artist is pleased. There is no satisfaction whatever at any time.
There is only a queer divine dissatisfaction; a blessed unrest that keeps us
marching and makes us
more alive than the others." - Martha Graham to Agnes DeMille

The WAA meeting regularly held on the third Monday of the month will be on March

healthy St. Patricks Day.
1. Letter from the President,
Hi Gang,
I'm pleased to announce the Lambert Castle Museum has invited us back to sponsor
another exhibit this coming Fall, 2008. Our exhibit at the Castle in 2004 was
great and we look forward to repeating that success. Until then we have other
excellent venues to exhibit in including our members exhibit in June at the
Pequannock Library and our plein air paint-out exhibit at the Hawthorne Library
in October. So get busy painting, sculpting, drawing, photo-ing?........whatever,
Get busy CREATING!
I'm really looking forward to this month's guest artist; Don Hults. I worked
briefly as a commercial photographer's for Mr. Hults at Lewis Studios', the
premier commercial photo studio in the tri-state area. If you saw a color
catalog anywhere in New Jersey, it probably was created at Lewis Studio's. Like
all successful business people, Don demanded the best from his photographers and
in doing so, brought the artistry out of each one. I'm really looking forward to
Don's presentation and hope you will join us in celebrating his journey with the
camera.
Regards,
Mike
2. Demo artist of the month: Don Hultz
About Don by Don;
Don Hults, born in Newark and raised in Millburn, NJ. After High School I went
to R.I.T. in Rochester to learn more about photography. I served as
a Signal Corps photographer in occupied Japan after WW2. Founded my own
commercial photography business in East Orange in 1948 and grew in size to be a
major studio in the tri state area. I finally retired in the year 2000. 50
years was enough. What I really want to tell you is that I have loved
everything about photography since I saw my first print come up in a developer
tray at the age of 13. I liked making money from the commercial end but that was
a way for me to be immersed in photography to make my living and enjoy life at
the same time. Often I would go off with my Dad to indulge in our mutual love of
pictorial or as I like to call it: art in photography. Lots of people do this
sort of photography today so I have the opportunity to compete in various juried
shows. I have won my share of ribbons, but the real pleasure is meeting so many
wonderful people who share the same interests. Now I am an antique-photographer
learning the depths of digital photography and print making on the computer. I
can't begin to tell you how exciting it is to do all this photo stuff outside of
a darkroom..and the results can be so amazingly unique it is hard to believe
what can be done. And more is yet to come, who knows what the future will bring.
3. WAA Members on display in Wayne
The WAA is proud to announce the exhibits of the following two
artists; Diane Neglio will have an exhibit of her sculpture on
display at the Wayne Public Library during the month of March. Gail Hawthorne

Studio Montclair. The exhibit is at the Ben Shahn Center at William Paterson
University, March 24 - April 22. An artist’s reception will be held Sunday,

1. Letter from the President,
Dear members,
Ultramarine Blue and Cadmium Red Deep are the colors of the day as the
Metropolitan area celebrates the Giants and their spectacular Super Bowl
victory. Like everyone else, I was caught up in the hype all weekend and watched
more highlights of the past season and previous Super Bowls than I thought was
possible!
So where's this going in regards to art you're probably asking; As I watched Eli
Manning rise to a level that many thought he was incapable of, I remember the
above quote from Robert Henri, ""When the artist is alive in any person he
becomes an inventive, searching, daring, self-expressing creature. He becomes
interesting to other people. He disturbs, upsets, enlightens, and he opens ways
for better understanding." For a few hours Sunday, Eli Manning was the artist
embodying every trait as described by Robert Henri. In the post-game interview
he emphasized that's where the true competitor wants the ball, in the position
to win or lose the game, but in the end, he wants the ball.]Perhaps the Giants
victory wasn't a masterpiece, but it was a true work of art.

2. Another great Shindig!

members came together for a fun night of socializing, good food, and a wonderful
display of members art. I'd like to thank everyone who attended and look forward
to having more members join us at future parties. As always, there's a lot of
hard work behind these events and on the behalf of the memberhip, we thank
Dorothy Piela, Bob Shine, Madeline Perez, Veronica Terranova, Gail Hawthorne,
and others who helped set up and clean up.

3. WAA General Meeting; Monday, February 18, 7:30 pm
Video Documentary: "AMerican Visions - The wilderness
and the West" (approx. 1 hr.)
( I had a chance to get a sneak preview.....this is excellent and not to be
missed! - Mike)
At our February meeting we're proud to present a video documentary "American
Visions", an eight part series on American art written and narrated by art
critic Robert Hughes, and his view of American history through its visual art,
painting, sculpture, architecture, and monuments. Volume three of an eight
part series entitled, "The wilderness and the West discusses the work of
landscape painters such as Thomas Cole, Frederick Church, and the Luminists, who
viewed the natural world as "the fingerprint of God's creation," and of
those who recorded America's westward expansion--George Caleb Bingham, Albert
Bierstadt, and Frederic Remington--and the accompanying shift in the
perception of the Indian, from noble savage to outright demon. Hughes tackles
the relationship between painting, national identity and Manifest Destiny. "The
new world has something better than ruins and history," it has landscape through
which "God had writ the immensity of his plan right here in America." On
location at Kaaterskill Falls in the Catskills, we retrace Thomas Cole's search
for the divinity in nature with Hughes suggesting the influence of art on
generations of earth-loving environmentalists. John James Audubon he describes
as a "brilliant stylist," whose images of the natural world were also,
occasionally, "elegies for species facing extinction." The spiritual and the
material were never more in conflict than during the age of Manifest Destiny,
which artists helped glamorize by creating the mythscape of the American West.
The way west left a trail of blood and broken dreams as American Indians were
driven into exile and starvation. As the frontier vanished with the relentless
expansion of men and machines, what remained in the public memory were the
images made by Albert Bierstadt, Thomas Moran, Frederick Church, Frederic
Remington and their peers.

4. Color Workshop -Feb. 9, Saturday 2-4 pm. or Feb. 10, Sunday 12-2 pm
This weekend I'll be presenting a lecture and demo on color mixing at the
Creators Workshop Art School. Over the past few years I've incorporated the
Munsell color system into my palette and as a central part of teaching color to
my students. In this workshop I will present an overview as to how the
Munsell-based pallette can simplify the mystique of color and make color mixing
easy. Free for Creators Workshop students, $10 fee for non-students. (The $10 is
well worth it in the money you'll save in not having to buy
unnecessary paints again!)

members. In short, attendance has been dismal. I originally felt it was
something of immense value for the serious artist, and I personally enjoyed the
workshops and the comeraderie of those who attended. We'll run it till March and
then discontinue it unless there's more interest. It's not in the interest of
the whole membership to finance something only a few are participating in.
Artists are invited to draw or paint. The workshop is free to WAA members and a
nominal $5 fee for non-members. Easels and drawing tables on a first come, first

1. Letter from the President,
Remembering Gloria
Dear members,
In a few weeks we'll join together for our 5th annual holiday party. This fun
little party has been a wonderful tradition for our association and every year
it's gets better and better and we're getting better doing it! Along with my
annual student holiday exhibit just a few days apart from our party , it's a
hectic week to say the least. My annual student exhibit is the highlight of the
year and like the WAA, it's about artists, friends, and families coming together
to share our love and appreciation for fine art. Seeing the pride on the faces
of our young artists at our holiday exhibit is almost as exhilarating as selling
a painting.....I said almost! At the end of the night when everyone's gone I sit
back, thoroughly exhausted, but grateful for the opportunity to do what I do and
for having so many wonderful people pass my way. This past year we lost one of
those wonderful people, Gloria Hall. Gloria passed away this past June and I
miss her dearly. Gloria's daughter Maureen Matano has been a part of the
Creators Workshop since it's first days. I can't remember exactly when but one
day Gloria was there, helping out, taking classes, but mostly helping out.
Together with her daughter Maureen, the impossible became possible. If you could
see the chaos of my studio two hours before our parties, you would run, not walk
out of my place! But miraculously, together they made it happen and I will
always be grateful. Gloria also was a talented artist in her own right and
frequently exhibitedin our member shows. Gloria was always there to help out and
she was a big=part of the success of the WAA. I miss her being in my class. I
miss her being at our meetings. I miss her being at WAA events but
mostly......... I sure do miss her helping at myparties!
Happy Holidays,
Mike

.1. Letter from the President,
Dear members,
I recently came across a poignant quote by Vincent Van Gogh and his regret .of
not having enough time to paint all the pictures he envisioned;. "And my aim in
my life is to make pictures and drawings, as many and as well .as I can; then,
at the end of my life, I hope to pass away, looking back
with love and tender regret, and thinking, 'Oh, the pictures I might have.
Despite suffering from mental illness, alcoholism, and numerous physical
.ailments, Vincent Van Gogh created over 900 paintings and 1100 drawings. before
his untimely death after only ten years as an artist, at the age of.37. When he
wasn't painting he spent his spare time writing letters to his .brother Theo
trying to persuade him to send art supplies whenever possible. .One of my most
treasured art books is "Letters to Theo - the complete
correspondence between Vincent and Theo. Van Gogh's passion and torment .becomes
evident in his own words and the reader gets a rare glimpse into his. genius.
.
Whenever possible I read these letters and it's like an artist's version of .Red
Bull!.. It energizes and motivates me to head directly to my easel. Like. Van
Gogh, hopefully we can look back and have a sense of satisfaction of the .art we
left behind...and also a little regret .As we head into a new season at the WAA,
I hope you find the same passion. and fervor for art that Vincent did, and
perhaps there's a Starry night in. your near future ..Regards,
Mike

1. Letter from the President,
Dear members,
Hope everyone is staying cool and having a nice summer. As much as I love
painting outdoors, and the ocean in particular, there's a lot to be said
for an air conditioned studio and some good photographs!!
!
The WAA board has been busy planning the upcoming season. Along with our demos
we're going to include a monthly draw/paint night on the 2nd Mon. of the week.
Our July workshop was very successful and it seems we have enough artists
interested to make it part of our schedule. We also voted on the purchase of DVD
projector for showing educational DVD's on a monthly basis as well. It also
gives me a chance to share my "Girls gone wild" DVD's with the boys of the WAA.
(Only kidding). Although......Friday night, buffalo wings and beer, $10 a guy,
we'll have membership over two hundred by December!
Back to reality, we have some great things happening in Sept., Eli Rosenthal at
our first meeting, our members show at the Hawthorne Library, and a members
exhibit at Bloomingdales, in Willowbrook. Don't miss Eli in Sept. This demo is
worth your membership alone! Until then, keep painting, drawing, sculpting, mix
media-ing, and photographing, andwhatever you do.
Regards,
Mike

Letter from the editor,
Dear
members, As we come to the close of our fourth season, on behalf of the
membership we thank all those who have dedicated their time, talents, and
efforts in helping the WAA make it through another year. Art communities
throughout our nation are facing the challenge of the new technologies which
are both a blessing and a curse. Obviously the blessing which include a
wealth of info., online marketing of your, art, discussion forums to share
ideas with other, digital technology, etc., certainly outweigh the curses
which are decline in memberships, the low turnout in local art exhibits, and
lack of interest in local art groups in general. So the challenge is to bring
the best of the two together and hope they provide the member with valuable
information to enrich the creative process. The enclosed survey and it's
results was an excellent way for the board to improve the WAA and to respond
to the concerns of the membership. Over the Summer the board will meet
frequently and will immediately enact many of the ideas provided as well as
work at making the WAA even better.
In closing, it's difficult to thank
all the contributions by board members individually but as a past president
who knows the responsibilities and sometimes hard work it takes to keep
things afloat I would like to personally thank Theresa Quirk for her hard
work as president. Her online skills helped show members the possibilities of
the internet for the artist. And to Joe Crann, we thank you for stepping up
as president over the last six months at critical time for the WAA.
Regards,
Mike Malzone
Next meeting is Monday, June 18, 2007,

and WAA elections WAA members are invited to a fun evening of great friends,
great art, and great pizza! Members will bring artwork which will be on
display and then will provide an insight into how they made this particular
piece. Our June meeting party is also an occasion to show our appreciation
and gratitude for all our outgoing officers for their dedication and work
over the last two years. Nothing says "We appreciate you" like an oily
slice of pizza!
Members interested in presenting a painting at this
meeting should sign up by contacting Bob Shine at 973-628-1345 and must bring

Power of Art by Simon Shama
June18,9 pm PBS SIMON SCHAMA'S POWER OF ART premieres Monday, June 18, 2007,
9:00 p.m. ET on PBS with "Van Gogh," followed by "Picasso" at 10:00 p.m. The
series continues on consecutive Mondays, June 25-July 30, 2007, 10:00-11:00
p.m. ET (check local listings). A television history of the creative moment,
the series features eight narratives of embattled heroes confronting disaster
and triumph while making art that continues to resonate. Propelled by
Schama's passionate storytelling, POWER OF ART melds dramatic re-enactments,
location shooting and art photography to create a challenging series that
explores the power and, ultimately, the whole point of art. "This is not a
series about things that hang on walls; it is not about decor or prettiness,"
Schama says. "It is a series about the force, the need, the passion of art --
the power of art."
SIMON SCHAMA'S POWER OF ART takes viewers on a
sweeping cinematic journey to the turning points in the lives of eight
artists and a work that defined the career of each. In the series, Schama
takes viewers to the murderous, messianic world of Baroque Rome; opulent
Amsterdam; paranoid revolutionary Paris; righteous Victorian England; the
madhouses and brothels of Provence; the carnage of civil war Spain; and New
York in the 1950s, caught between Cold War jitters and Manhattan glitter.
In each place, an artist is backed into a corner and facing a crisis of
politics, poverty, passion, oppression or mental stress. In each story, the
drama of the creative moment unfolds with the suspense of a crime, battle or
love affair. Throughout the series, Schama zeroes in on a pivotal moment in
each artist's life while confronting a broader question: Does art triumph
over commerce? What can art do in the face of atrocity? In the segment on
Rembrandt, Schama asks, "What's the worst thing that can happen to a
painter?" Each program charts a collision between the power of art and a
skeptical or indifferent world. And in each case, Schama builds on his
argument that art is a flood of truth, a flight of freedom -- an argument
that makes an irresistible case for why art matters. In his own way, each
artist sought art's power to deliver -- for a moment or for a lifetime --
the possibility of wonder. In their masterworks, Schama finds the history of
humanity's creative spark and the hope of its rekindled future.

WAA members Survey In our April newsletter we
provided an artists survey and asked members to fill out the form and return
it in the SASE. We thank all those members who took the time to provide us
with some very valuable information. Although I' m personally disappointed in
the small response, I'm excited with the input and really think that the
board can effectively address these concerns. For the member who suggested
that the meeting place was untidy and needs to be brighter and more
decorative, I passionately invite them to call me so I can give them a key to
the studio to TIDY the place up anytime they want. I wholly agree with them
the place can be tidied up before meetings but considering I usually spend up
to two hours setting up chairs, getting out info, and providing for the demo
artist, and then at least an hour cleaning up afterwards, I hardly have
tidying-up time. As to making the place brighter and more colorful- Since
it's a working art studio and art school and since most of the paintings on
the wall are mine, hmmm, I guess that's a personal criticism of my artwork.
Well, the laughs on you dear respondent since I was the only member voted as
one the greatest artists of all time! I may be sloppy but I belong to the
ages!!! The survey is attached. ENJOY!
Membership Dues Yes. it's that
time of year to shake you down for a measly $25. As someone who belongs
to a few art associations, not one them, none, provide as much valuable
workshops and programs as the WAA does. The 2007-08 will be an exciting time
with plans for new exhibit venues, museum trips, sketch and paint classes and
as always, great art demos. Thanks in advance. The membership application is
attached. (Click on JOIN above)
Wishing all our members and their
family an enjoyable summer and look forward to seeing you in September
